What do you place your Hope in?
So many times here in Moldova the amount of poverty we see can seem never-ending and so many live without hope each and every day. Even when you think you have seen the worst case of poverty there is always the next village around the corner. The feeling of living without hope can be overpowering and down right depressing even to a foreigner’s eyes who see this living situation as unacceptable. Then one day you are out visiting with families sharing the Gospel and just loving on them as the Lord would do and you cross paths with someone who has hope in the Lord. This exact situation happened to me in the past few weeks. I was with a team in the village out gathering follow up information for goat projects, I was introduced to Anna and she was smiling. You see Anna is a young lady who gave up on life about 7 years ago. In her mind and heart she was at the end of the road and had no place to turn. She was dealt some situations by her own choices in life. She was 17 years old, pregnant, homeless and at the doorsteps of the local church. You might say she is just another statistic and you are exactly right but not the normal Moldavian statistic. You see shortly after the church took her in she realized her sins, she repented and she place her hope in the Lord. The church recognized her change of heart and began to give her more responsibility around the church. Now seven years have pasted, she still places her hope in the Lord and her life is not like a normal Moldavian life. The house next to the church belongs to the church and this is where Anna and her child call home. She is responsible for the upkeep of the house, along with security of the church property. She also over sees many programs at the church like children and youth programs, and summer camps. Over the years she has not been paid by the church but she managed to start a small business in the village which has grown to be a strong well known business for locally grown produce. She manages two small greenhouses in which she grows tomatoes and cucumbers. She has place her hope and trust in the Lord and He has provided for her time and time again. She will tell you without the Lord she would have nothing for He is her hope for tomorrow.
But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31 is the life verse for Anna and she lives it fully by example. She is such an encouragement to the people of the village especially the youth who see no future in Moldova. They must see past the norm and see there is hope for them which in turn gives hope to Moldova. Please pray for Anna along with the many others here in Moldova who have placed their hope in the Lord just as Isaiah 40:31 says.
As I close I am encouraged too by Anna’s story, so many times we give up on the daily struggles in life. I feel that if from the get go our eyes were on our hope the results would be a great deal different. In the coming days and weeks when you run into roadblocks or even experience failure I challenge you to think about Anna, look back at her picture and place your hope in the Lord, who knows where you will be in seven years. God is good, all the time God is good.
I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.
